OXFORD FALLS
Cascading waterfalls and sensitive design create a lively neighbourhood for residents of this Warringah retirement village.
A highlight of this project is the abundance of community services. A large central square provides sports and communal facilities surrounded by public seating and an inviting garden.
Residents can participate in swimming, gymnasium, arts and crafts and various activities focused on a central community hall.
Terraced landscaping provides a beautiful backdrop for trickling waterfalls, fountain and lake.
A tennis academy, administration offices, nursing home, medical centre, restaurants and other commercial services – such as newsagent, cafes and other shopfronts are provided within the site.
Paved walkways draw residents towards the communal hub where scenic paths bridge the lake. Access to small groups of dwellings are deliberately located around smaller spaces.
“Creating smaller, private open spaces helps residents to get to know each other and allows a natural sense of community to develop,” said architect Fayek Azer. “People like to interact on a small scale and that helps to cultivate a feeling of safety and security.”
Ground floor units are accessed by gate through private courtyards, creating a traditional Sydney terrace-like feel, while many upper-floor units enjoy panoramic views over the valley and surroundings.
The centrally located Nursing Home also ensures that its residents enjoy interaction with other residents throughout the village.
